ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the reader with insight and understanding concerning the vulnerable adult in the acute care setting as well as those whose health and wellbeing is at risk of deterioration. Key terms are described, helping the reader to understand the rights of vulnerable adults in acute care situations and to examine health and social policy provision for vulnerable adults. Ensuring that the voice of the vulnerable adult is heard, and action taken, is key to the provision of safe care. Some ethical considerations relevant to the care and treatment of vulnerable people in the acute care setting are outlined as along with issues concerning delirium.
