ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 provides the reader with an introduction to the structure and function of cells along with the composition of the main tissue types, their functions, tissue repair and the inflammatory process. The chapter considers the microscopic and macroscopic aspects of the human. Studying the human from a cellular level helps to recognise those factors impacting on health and a person’s vulnerability to illness. Observing the person from a cellular level is only one aspect of a wider understanding; providing a fundamental basis concerning the chemical foundations of life, how the body’s cells are built and operate, the tissues of the body and how they function allows the reader to appreciate what occurs when cells, tissues and organ systems fail.
