ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the cells that make up the nervous system and the way in which the nervous system is organised. The structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous system are discussed, and an overview of the autonomic nervous system is presented. Common neurological diseases and injuries are reviewed, and neurological assessment described. Competence in neurological assessment is a key nursing skill and is crucial for the early detection, management and care of those people with neurological medical emergencies.
