ABSTRACT

A group of 28 first-year medical students at a Japanese medical school took part in a project-based language learning unit that centered on the video game Plague Inc. Results from surveys and the analysis of assertions made by the students indicate that the project, in cooperation with playing Plague Inc., engaged the students and promoted learning in the areas of language acquisition, epidemiology, and understanding medical symptoms. The findings also suggest that the use of video games in the classroom may increase motivation and provide a setting through which students can acquire language and other content areas.
