ABSTRACT

This chapter offers practical insight into how to conduct a meditation-based mindfulness training (MT) intervention in a soccer setting. The course covered the basic theory behind MT and contained 50% theoretical lectures and 50% practical MT exercises. In addition to the personal benefits for spouses, the aviators reported an increased motivation to engage in MT when their partners got to know about MT, and many of them endorsed the training. Although there is evidence in support of the benefits of MT, there is still a lack of high-quality studies in high-performance settings. During MT, a player practices the ability to focus and refocus on the present moment. A state of complacency and reduced present-centered awareness is something we particularly want to avoid during MT. As the actual training is fundamental to the benefits, and if motivation to do the MT is significant, an MT intervention without a comprehensive introductory course could be worthwhile.
