ABSTRACT

Inclusion in India is still exploratory; however, with the increase in the number of individuals with disabilities, the government recognizes the need for inclusion, as is evident in the most recent Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016. Thus, inclusion does not seem to be a distant dream anymore. This chapter highlights three examples of inclusive practices: namely, the instructional framework developed by Pratham Education Foundation, Building as Learning Aid (BaLA), and the Barkhaa—A Reading Series for All, followed by various organizations and institutions to promote inclusion focusing on needs of children with disabilities. These practices have been incorporated in the context of UDL implementation in the learning environment with the intent of developing accessible materials to make classrooms more inclusive and provide appropriate and meaningful experiences to all the learners sitting under one roof. Consequently, the chapter further aims to provide information on how these inclusive instructional designs provide autonomy to learners, support self-regulated learning, and help in reducing barriers by creating accessible instructional resources and environment.
