ABSTRACT

Learning online has become an expectation in higher education and, to a slightly lesser degree, at the kindergarten through the twelfth-grade levels. Given the overall increase in online learning at all levels, it is critical to address the accessibility of content created not only with learning management system (LMS) tools, but also with online course materials as they are created or added to an online course. This chapter will share best practices and strategies related to the development of accessible online course materials through implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 standards and applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Topics include general accessibility guidelines for online course content creation, creating online course content using LMS tools and tools outside the LMS, accessibility checkers, publisher content considerations, and mobile LMS application tips.
