ABSTRACT

Institutions of higher education are increasingly focused on the globalization of curricula and making learning more inclusive for students. This chapter considers how Universal Design for Learning supports the development of intercultural competence in college learners, while helping to meet the needs of a high-risk community in Ecuador. Using an international service learning (ISL) course model grounded in the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, an inclusive science-based curriculum incorporating sustainable development goals (SDGs) at a single school and orphanage in Ecuador was delivered on site by college students from a mid-size, northeast US college. Qualitative results reveal both professionally valuable and life-changing experiences for college learners, and tangible positive outcomes for Ecuadorian students and community members.
