ABSTRACT

Designing devices and systems that allow for universal access is essential. The peril, though, is that often those with the access and ability to do so are segregated from the populations with diverse abilities who need to or could be the systems’ potential users and could help push further innovation for needs that may not otherwise be accounted for in the design. In order for emergent technologies to support universal access, they must have a focus on the inclusion of varied users and incorporate this variability into the design, prototyping and development stages.
