ABSTRACT

This chapter provides background on the work of the Future Air Navigation System (FANS) Committee and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its panels as that work is related to the surveillance component of Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems. It includes a description of the envisioned changes that will form the basis of future surveillance systems and methods, and a review of the benefits to aviation that could be expected with implementation of the new systems. The chapter discusses some of the ways and places where the surveillance element of CNS/ATM technology is being experimented with and implemented. Additionally, pilot interface will provide a means to send and receive routine data messages. The automatic dependent surveillance function is supported by avionics equipment which is able to gather aircraft data from on-board systems format them and direct them to the relevant air-ground link via the data link processor.
