ABSTRACT

Presenting a second language in its cultural context utilizing up-to-date technological tools makes studying it more palatable, and class time, as well as term projects, more attractive. This is particularly pertinent in the case of the Arabic classroom since Arabic is commonly perceived as hard to learn, and the culture of its native speakers is new to most beginner students. Finding a textbook that complements the instructor’s philosophy makes a teacher’s job easier and allows the instructor to achieve his or her educational goals. Luckily, there are a number of textbook series that Arabic instructors can choose from. In this chapter, I discuss my approach to teaching Arabic as a second language and the reasons behind incorporating culture into my curriculum. I will also explain my reliance on the latest relevant technological tools, especially for class projects and assignments.
