ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the personal stories of homeowners fighting eviction and who worked with Occupy Homes Minnesota. The “Our Home” stories challenged dominant understandings of the foreclosure crisis, and fits under what the author defines as the tactic of strategic storytelling. First, the author explains the organization of Occupy Homes and then reviews theories of narrative developed by scholars and activists. “Our Home” narratives are analyzed using the narrative power analysis and drama triangle models used by Center for Story-Based Strategy to show how these stories advocate on behalf of homeowners. Finally, the challenges for movements attempting to “change the story” are covered.
