ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of a young man Joe with a complex special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) profile. Art was the greatest tool in helping build that crucial bond with Joe. He was a gifted artist, and by the end of Key Stage 4, he had earned a GCSE grade C in art and finished Key Stage 5 with a grade B in his A-level art exam. Members of the Warnock Committee conducted many school visits as part of their enquiry. Baroness Warnock recognised that an appropriate curriculum for learners with SEND, in both mainstream and specialist settings, was essential for achieving two things. First, it provides a space within which ‘good personal relationships’ could be fostered between the teacher and the pupil; and second, it provides the kinds of stimuli and opportunities for engagement in learning required for motivating pupils at risk of educational failure.
