ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a complex and political design and planning issue that can be assisted by spatial computer tools, land development, and redevelopment processes. Smart Places provides a configurable framework for establishing multiple criteria to assist resource managers in spatial decision making. The Smart Places interface provides a radial-hierarchical selection of planning priorities and evaluation models from the Radix Evaluation Model Management system window. Before the Spatial decision support systems (SDSS) computer aided drafting and design software had been used with hand-drawn, artistic additions. SDSS which involve the use of geographic information systems have been used to facilitate the application of multi-criteria methods for analytical planning applications such as waste management and route selection. Any system developed to support land development and redevelopment decisions should include a mechanism for addressing the issue of ranking or weighting criteria in a manner that incorporates the multiple perspectives of various interest groups.
