ABSTRACT

This chapter explores early childhood practice in Greece. Expressed communication involves one-way or two-way exchanges. Two-way communication involves interactive dialogue between teachers and parents aiming at the exchange of information but also at active participation and engagement. The initial contact between parents and staff members takes place in May, when parents register their children to the setting. Communication begins with the welcome sign when the parent first enters the school building. The head teacher welcomes parents in a friendly manner and informs them about the documentation needed in order to register their child. Technology is part of educational practice and forms a way of communication within the Greek context. “Steps for life” is an annual, evidence-based, universal early childhood tool kit which incorporates guided parental involvement on aspects of children’s emotional understanding, self-control, empathy, problem-solving and friendship skills.
