ABSTRACT

The traditional job of a security attendant is to patrol the library, admonishing anyone found behaving unacceptably. The choice of measures aimed at the alleviation of behaviour and security problems must be similarly wide-ranging. There is no single course of action which will meet effectively the different challenges of, for instance, damage to the exterior of the building when the library is closed and behaviour problems inside the library during its opening hours. The potential contribution of the various participants in the partnership will depend on a number of factors. The policy, and sometimes the politics, of the organisations involved may impact upon their commitment to helping the library cope with its problems. In smaller libraries, staff numbers on duty at particular times may need to be increased beyond the level required for straightforward service delivery.
