ABSTRACT

For modern historians the link between the rise of the polis, with its broad citizen base rather than exclusive aristocratic control, and the rise of hoplite-heavy infantrymen, and hoplite warfare in particular, has become one of the most well-discussed problems of ancient Greek history. Nothing can be taken for granted regarding the timing and nature of the emergence of both phenomena, let alone establishing a link between the two. This chapter explores the problems regarding questions of their connection. It discusses all sides of what is an ongoing debate and offers some conclusions concerning the emergence and predominance of the hoplite and hoplite ideology and any correlation with citizenship.
