ABSTRACT

A major challenge to official statistics today is presented by the statistical description of the information society and all the various phenomena that are related to it This is not a completely novel challenge in that the problem has been receiving much attention for some time now. However, so far the phenomenon of the information society has remained too big and too complex to grasp, not only for statisticians but for social scientists in general. The challenge of presenting a systematic statistical account of the information society is complicated by the fact that we lack a broader theoretical framework on which to base that account.
