ABSTRACT
The Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is scheduled to begin on 1 January 1999. At the moment, mid-1997, we still do not know which countries will form this union, as the relevant decision will not be taken until Spring 1998. What we do know, is that the creation of a huge area in which a single currency - the euro - is used, will affect the organisation and production of statistics in the European Union, in the rest of Europe, and very probably around the globe.
