ABSTRACT

Social work is an international profession that has been practiced in various cultural contexts. The International Federation of Social Workers defines social work as follows: The social work profession promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being. Social workers bring to their practice their family structure, gender, experience, values, and cultural and religious affiliations – all of which would invite a range of interpretations of ethics for ethical decision-making. The aim of the models is to provide practitioners with guidelines to assist them to make an insightful decision and offer a rationale and reasoning to inform a decision. Learning about decision-making enables social workers to feel more confident in justifying decisions, to be aware of some of the guilt feelings, and to identify the morally right ways to practice. The decision should be taken according to the existing policies but should ensure that the client is safe.
