ABSTRACT

The majority of the research and discussion on career transitions in sport has focused on transition into sport and out of sport. In the performance domain of dance, transition, particularly career termination, has received some attention in research and applied practice. Transitions one experiences, and in particular career termination transitions, may have strong and important impacts on identity that may require the need for self-redefinition. Research on transitions has been done in various domains of non-sport performance. In the performance domain of dance, transition, particularly career termination, has received some attention in research and applied practice. Specific to sport, several important factors have been identified from the research that can also be helpful in understanding transitions in any performance area. The musicians utilized self-belief and determination, social skills, adaptability and coping skills, and realistic evaluations to help them navigate through this transition.
