ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of professional philosophy in applied practice and illustrates how this concept can be applied across sport, exercise and performance psychology. It offers questions and reflective exercises for other practitioners to consider and begin to explore the beliefs and values underlying their own applied work. A practitioner’s professional philosophy is a driving force behind his or her consulting process. A direct consequence of these deeper layers of professional philosophy is a selected model of practice, including: psychological skills training model, counseling model, medical model, interdisciplinary sport science model and supervisory consulting model with integrative approach. The Canadian Chiropractors association developed an index based on thirteen items intended to measure member’s attitudes toward a professional philosophy. A range of considerations are present in delivery contexts, and practitioners are required to recognize and respond to these relative to their own preferences and philosophy.
