ABSTRACT

This chapter explores cultural diversity and power in sport, exercise and performance domains; ethical issues as they relate to delivery of service; the importance of cultural competence and multicultural training among sport, exercise and performance psychology (SEPP) professionals; multicultural and diverse theoretical orientations. There are several concepts and definitions that are important for SEPP professionals to understand related to multicultural and issues of difference in sport. Sport is a diverse environment which includes individuals from different cultural and racial backgrounds. SEPP professionals work with and study these diverse groups of athletes, exercisers, coaches and performers, and also embody different experiences related to their own unique and diverse identities. A cultural sport psychology theoretical approach might be helpful when thinking about expanding the theoretical definition of the performing self in SEPP.
