ABSTRACT

Concerns with the current study are ontological and epistemological in nature. Notably, the conceptual basis of the study—that de-policing is a reality in the post-Ferguson United States—is misguided; contemporary police practices are increasingly aggressive and invasive. Further, this chapter is devoid of the experiences of Black Americans, a population markedly impacted by police practices and reforms including the deployment of body-worn cameras. In addition to these concerns, the authors’ claim that body-worn cameras do not induce police passivity is undermined by an inappropriate study site and sample. Overall, this research can be described as a mobilization of “White” logic, falling into a category of criminological research that reifies a problematic status quo.
