ABSTRACT

When the mayor of the small Indonesian town of Solo, Joko Widodo won the election to become Governor of Jakarta in 2012, there were high hopes that he and his Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahya Purnama would bring more accountable, free, and transparent governance to the city. This chapter shows whether Jokowi and Ahok were able to deliver their promises to provide more accountable, transparent, and responsive governance as well as to curb corruption. It aims to contribute to the existing literature by focusing on governance and anti-corruption reform by local government, especially the government of DKI Jakarta under Jokowi and Ahok. Similarly, Sandra Hamid claims that the results of the Jakarta gubernatorial election conveyed a message of discontent with the status quo and desire for change. Kurniawan and Utami focus on the Jakarta Post’s open endorsement of Jokowi in the presidential election.
