ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the literature on the relationship between group dynamics and sport governance. It draws on this analysis to outline a research agenda to further understanding in the field. A board of directors is a group of individuals who make joint decisions and act together to govern the organisation. Research on group dynamics in governance requires a reconsideration of the common theoretical approaches to studying governance. While shared leadership focuses on the board–chief executive officer (CEO) relationship, power patterns describe how power is distributed in a board – lending insight into how the board operates. While it is evident that boards should consider their various group dynamics, understanding the relationships between group dynamics would allow for more impactful recommendations. The CEO relies on the board to provide strategic guidance and advice while the board relies on the CEO for information to create strategy and oversee the organisation.
