ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that sport governance is an internal element of an overarching sport integrity system. An integrity system is much broader and involves both internal and external mechanisms that seek integrity of an sport governing bodies (SGB). Critics have called on SGBs to adopt various mechanisms to address integrity concerns in sport, such as the need for integrity management, honest competitions and outcomes, good governance, cultural change and national and international legislation. The meaning of sport integrity also incorporates both perspectives where integrity relates to ensuring honest competitions and outcomes as well as management practices. The basic components of a sport integrity system framework outline the elements and conditions considered important for the integrity of an SGB. The moral framework of an SGB governance structure is first articulated through its mission statement that describes the organisation’s purpose and emphasises “values, positive behaviours and guiding principles within the framework of the corporation’s announced belief system and ideology”.
