Olympic and Paralympic impacts in non-host city regions

In this chapter, we aim first to provide a general literature review on the topic of impacts in non-host areas, of sporting mega-events in general and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in particular. We then present two case studies of non-host areas – Shanghai’s and Leicestershire’s – experiences of being part of the Games when their host nations staged the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Beijing 2008 and London 2012 respectively).
