ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with an overview of the Games cultural programme evolution, from its original presentation in the form of Olympic Art Competitions to its latest incarnation as a four-year Cultural Olympiad and its raise in prominence within the Paralympic Games. The chapter then discusses key trends and challenges, and it ends by touching on the new thinking emerging in the context of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Agenda 2020 and the growing cultural and artistic aspirations of the Paralympic movement.
