ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the diagnosis of peripartum depression, detailing the diagnostic criteria. Screening tools for assessment and diagnosis are discussed, including screening instruments for peripartum depression, anxiety, and substance use. This chapter discusses ways to screen for maternal suicidality to protect women and their babies. It also discusses related clinical concerns that can be the focus of treatment, including paternal peripartum depression, adoptive depression, and perinatal loss. Evaluating peripartum women with suicidal or homicidal ideation is also highlighted, helping clinicians prepare to effectively intervene and protect families. This chapter includes a case study that explores the impact of perinatal loss on maternal mental health.
