ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the importance of work and job design within the wider application of human resource management practices. It considers the broader context of work and organizational design, linking to organizational cultural issues and the different techniques and tools which may be utilized in formulating the elements of a job. Theoretical perspectives such as socio-technical systems, job enrichment and job quality analysis are considered and how these wider issues translate to HRM administrative tasks as in job descriptions and specifications. The chapter also reviews the different managerial approaches to target setting within job design, both for the individual and for groups at work, and considers some issues specific to the hospitality industry.
