ABSTRACT

The importance of careful and systematic employee selection methods are discussed within an overall context of labour shortages, skill shortages and the desire to reduce labour turnover. The selection process is outlined from personnel and job specification stages to contemporary methods of online/social media application and applicant tracking based on computer algorithms. Interviewing, assessment centres and the use of batteries of tests and psychometric approaches are all considered. The advantages and limitations of the interview are covered, with practical guidance on effective interviewing, still a mainstay of most selection procedures. There is a case study task and also referral to the case study of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection.
