ABSTRACT

Important to the development of dance/movement therapy (DMT) praxis, education and research is identifying key terms such as principles/laws, mechanisms, methods/approaches/theories, beliefs/assumptions/core concepts/philosophies and interventions. A clarification of terms will assist the profession in coherently classifying what we think, how and why DMT works. One important belief has influenced my work as a dance/movement therapist. It is the belief that creativity breeds creativity. The purpose of this chapter is to explore how this belief influences my practice as a dance/movement therapist and how the fundamental mechanisms of dance/movement therapy provide a grounded description of this belief and others shared by the discipline. A theoretical teaching framework called, A-FECT, will be introduced to illustrate the application of terms and their systematization.
