ABSTRACT

The increased prevalence of technology, combined with children’s attraction to both the devices and software available to them, has resulted in greater adoption by parents and educators. Research must investigate how young children are introduced to technology and how their early learning experiences unfold. It is critical to understand the developmental, social, and technical aspects that impact access and outcomes. In the following chapter we will explore the ubiquitous nature of technologies in the lives of young children, toddlers and infants today. The chapter will also consider both the unique literatures available for television and mobile computer technologies independently, as well as issues relevant to screen media in general. There is a need for more systematic evaluation of research as well as development of mechanisms for translation to parents and educators.
