ABSTRACT

Most Christian colleges are denominational in affiliation, and most independent colleges are not avowedly Christian. Therefore the category of “Independent Christian colleges and universities” is not a large one. I have seen it identified as such very infrequently. One major source that does recognize it is Manning M. Pattillo and Donald M. Mackenzie, Church Sponsored Higher Education in the United States (Washington, 1966), p. 249. Pattillo and Mackenzie found only fifteen independent Christian colleges; my list is longer, but nevertheless supports the impression that there are not many contemporary colleges and universities that are both continuing Christian in philosophical orientation and independent of denominational ties in governance.
