ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes appraising the evolving role of the EU in the promotion and protection of human rights in third countries’ markets, by analysing the potentials and limits of selected aspects of its external action. It, therefore, focuses on three specific instruments that integrate trade liberalization and economic partnerships with the promotion of human rights and democracy beyond its borders: the incorporation of ad hoc human rights clauses, the inclusion of sustainable development chapters and the reference to CSR.
