ABSTRACT

Sexual and relationship health is a critical, albeit often overlooked, aspect of overall health and well-being. Traditionally, sex and relationship therapy has overwhelmingly focused on serving White, heterosexual, cisgender, upper middle-class individuals and couples. Only recently have we started to witness a shift in the focus of sexual and relationship health care toward a more diverse and inclusive practice. In an attempt to better illuminate sexual and relationship health needs within the trans/nonbinary (TNB) community, this chapter includes an overview of the (sparse) existing research literature, as well as important community-created resources (e.g., sexual health zines). Additionally, we review and discuss best practices for providing competent sex and relationship therapy that is both gender-affirming and inclusive. The chapter closes with a clinical case study, questions for further thought and discussion, and a resource list for additional exploration.
