ABSTRACT

This chapter will provide an overview of trans/nonbinary (TNB) relevant policy issues enacted at multiple levels – national, state, local, and organizational – that can both marginalize or empower TNB people. While not an exhaustive list, policy domains covered here include employment and housing, public accommodations, health care, identity documents, and organizational policy. This chapter provides readers with a framework for policy analysis and action they can utilize to empower themselves and others towards policy change. It concludes with case scenarios and a TNB policy resource toolkit for both educational and advocacy purposes. This chapter is not intended to replace other introductions to policy, policy-making, or policy practice. Rather, it highlights important policy issues and considerations germane to TNB populations within the contemporary United States.
