ABSTRACT

Individuals with disabilities, impairments, and/or chronic illness experience elevated rates of discrimination in our society, with disabled and chronically ill trans/nonbinary (TNB) individuals experiencing disparities at even higher rates. Social workers must be prepared to work with clients who are both TNB and disabled in ways that go above the basics of competency. We must be prepared to address the needs of trans and disabled individuals at both clinical and structural levels. This chapter presents foundational background and best practice information while also speaking to higher-level impacts experienced by this population.
