ABSTRACT

Religious, secular, and spiritual (RSS) identities and communities provide unique challenges and possible supports in trans/nonbinary (TNB) people’s lives. TNB people are known to trans, or move outside the boundaries of, RSS categories; experience higher levels of possible discrimination in RSS communities (and subsequent disaffiliation); and, also, develop resiliency and integration of self through RSS identities and communities. Being aware of the literature at this intersection can help social work and health care practitioners address some of the challenges faced by the TNB community and may also help them connect to the broad array of resiliency building that can happen when engaging the religious, secular, and spiritual side of people’s lives. Rather than ignoring this part of a client’s life, this chapter encourages human service professionals to explore this intersection with their clients and concludes with a classroom or workshop exercise, and several resources to aid in this process.
