ABSTRACT

Trans and nonbinary people (TNB) who seek mental health care are interacting with a system that has often ignored and overtly discriminated against the TNB community. This complicates the process of seeking care, especially given that TNB individuals are at an increased risk of experiencing mental health concerns. This increased risk may be related to experiences of transphobia and experiences of microaggressions as individuals navigate both systems and social contexts. This chapter offers insight into the mental health concerns of TNB individuals while also offering suggestions for how to create affirming and welcoming spaces for those who are seeking mental health treatment. A client scenario and resource list are also offered.
