ABSTRACT

“Recording Truth: The Camera in Acting Training” illuminates how the camera can be a powerful diagnostic tool for both instructors and students alike. Using just the technology in our pockets, actors can discover how an actor’s choices shape our storytelling, and empowers students to assess and evaluate their own work. This chapter includes two partner exercises: “60 Second Observation” and “Storytelling,” which are recorded with an actor’s cell phone and then played back along with guided discussion. In this essay, White offers a useful and innovative examination of how visual, cinematic storytelling, and the camera itself, can enhance classroom methods and help the actor to practice “living truthfully” within their given circumstances.
