ABSTRACT

The Aragonese people, represented by their estates (called brazos), succeeded in negotiating a constitution with their king and in creating the necessary institutional framework to ensure that this constitution was complied with. The Diputación (government) and the Justicia, the two most important institutions in the kingdom, were under the control of the Cortes (parliament). Representation was fundamental in shaping Aragon’s political regime. After a detailed analysis of the different institutions, the second part of the chapter explores whether these institutions were truly representative in their institutional role.
