ABSTRACT

This article offers a concise view of the historic process of the constitution, evolution and suppression of the Crown of Aragon as a marital, personal and territorial union of the kingdoms and lands of the Count of Barcelona and King of Aragon during the medieval and modern periods. Also discussed is the abortive attempt to create a United Kingdom during the second half of the 14th century by the Estates of Catalonia, Aragon and Valencia during the Universal Courts sessions held in Monzón. An analysis of the consecration and coronation ceremonies of the Crown of Aragon monarchs in Zaragoza reveals mechanisms of political representation, both ascendant (from people to king) and descendant (from God to king), of the monarchs and the populi subject to their public authority, in their dimension as members of the mystical body or universal community of the Crown.
