ABSTRACT

The definition of internationalisation continues to change and evolve within Higher Education. For a fuller understanding of internationalisation and the relationship with intercultural dialogue, additional voices and multiple perspectives need to be brought into the discussion. Practitioners are often responsible for developing and implementing internationalisation activities, however reflexive analysis of this experience is largely absent from the literature. This chapter introduces a conceptual framework created by one scholar-practitioner to reimagine the concept of internationalisation. An emic perspective is used to illuminate issues encountered by the practitioner. The framework presented, the Intersection of Internationalisation, analyses functional areas and argues that internationalisation needs to be both academically recognized and operationalized. Opportunities, operations, facilitation and student learning are brought together to provide a framework and road map for conceptualization and successful implementation of internationalisation using an intercultural dialogue approach. It is suggested that applying the proposed framework with such an approach could result in more effective and comprehensive internationalisation being achieved.
