ABSTRACT

In this chapter the author reflects on Annette Karmiloff-Smith's committed role as a mentor to her students and researchers. He shares several stories about how he was mentored by Annette and the lessons he learned from his experience as her student. The author grew up in China. He moved to the UK in 1989, initially as a visiting research fellow at the MRC Cognitive Development Unit under Dr. Annette's supervision. Annette accepted the author to work with her in 1989 without knowing anything about him beyond what James Greeno wrote in his letter of recommendation. After he had settled in London, he went to see Annette about what research topic to study. She said she could supervise him on a topic she knew and cared about, and she gave him three questions that fit these categories. She told him not to decide right away, but rather to think them through carefully and choose the one he was most passionate about.
