ABSTRACT

This part conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters. The part focuses on grief and loss in various ways, the desire to bring these experiences into awareness, with the hope of providing readers with a deeper awareness of the human experience unites the contributed writings in the book. The language of loss, expressed in these stories, the associated feelings, and potential for growth from these experiences, makes up a large part of our human experience, albeit often unacknowledged as such. A big emphasis in the death awareness movement has been upon recognizing that life is a limited resource that should not be squandered. Even the moments of uncertainty, pain, loss, and disenfranchisement can shape us in ways that open us to cultivate greater sensitivity to others, allow for an appreciation for what might be possible, and even surprise us by bringing forth our own resilience and strength.
