ABSTRACT

We first give some background on the general concept of desert and discuss whether it is coherent or ambiguous. Thereafter, we introduce the prevailing distinction between economic and moral desert and discuss the merits and, most importantly, demerits of the resulting non-moralising conception of economic desert. Finally, we sketch a moralising version of economic desert. We find that our version of moralised economic desert can accommodate parts of the public outcry that has been directed towards the executive remuneration practices of Wall Street.
