ABSTRACT

The motivating idea of this chapter is that the degree to which professions and their members act responsibility can have an impact on the ethical quality or behaviour of business in general and banking in particular. There are some signs that an attempt is being made to develop the professional culture of bankers, in the UK at least, so there is some encouragement for this idea. However, I suggest that a fuller understanding of professions and professional responsibility than has currently been in evidence is critical to making this project a success in the UK and elsewhere. Moreover, having built that understanding of professions, I go beyond bankers to consider how other professional groups might also contribute.
