ABSTRACT

The advent of human immuno-deficiency virus has put sex workers centre stage. As Plant notes, clients vastly outnumber sex workers in all settings. Commercial sex is a worldwide phenomenon, and there is a high level of demand for paid sexual services. The chapter focuses on issues relating to female sex workers. It shows that issues pertaining to male sex workers where relevant and where data is available. The chapter aims to provide those who wish to undertake needs assessment work develop or improve services for IV drug-using sex workers in their area, or commission research activity in this field. It examines the range of issues involved, considers what is currently known and provides some pointers for those wishing to design and implement local services. Many sex workers who inject drugs did so before becoming involved in sex work and the main reason for engaging and continuing in sex work is in support of their habit.
